Ski Pole Length Size Chart Guide: Finding the Perfect Fit
Ski poles are often overlooked, but the wrong length can throw off your entire stance. Too long, and you’ll be sitting back on your heels (bad form). Too short, and you’ll bend too much at the waist (lower back pain).
The 90-Degree Rule
The classic way to size a ski pole is the 90-degree test:
- Flip the pole upside down (grip on the floor).
- Grab the pole just under the basket.
- Your elbow should form a perfect 90-degree angle.
This works great for general alpine skiing, but what about park or powder?
Ski Pole Size Chart (Alpine / All-Mountain)
| Skier Height (cm/ft) | Pole Length (cm) | Pole Length (in) |
|---|---|---|
| 150cm (4’11”) | 105 | 42 |
| 155cm (5’1”) | 110 | 44 |
| 160cm (5’3”) | 110 | 44 |
| 165cm (5’5”) | 115 | 46 |
| 170cm (5’7”) | 115 | 46 |
| 175cm (5’9”) | 120 | 48 |
| 180cm (5’11”) | 120 | 48 |
| 185cm (6’1”) | 125 | 50 |
| 190cm (6’3”) | 130 | 52 |
Park & Freestyle Sizing
Park skiers prefer shorter poles (usually 5-10cm shorter than standard). Why?
- Prevent Snags: Less likely to catch on rails or boxes.
- Compact Style: Looks cleaner and prevents poles from hitting the ground during spins.
- Function: You rarely use poles for propulsion in the park; they are mostly for balance.
Recommendation: Size down by 5-10cm. For a 175cm skier, use 110cm or even 105cm poles.
Backcountry & Powder Sizing
Backcountry skiers often face deep snow where the basket sinks in.
- Adjustable Poles: Highly recommended. You can lengthen them for the uphill skin track (pushing efficiency) and shorten them for the downhill descent.
- Fixed Length: Stick to your Alpine size, but ensure you have large powder baskets.
